Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) Students' Annual Dinner
by Rachel Chan
On the 15th of August 2007, HELP University College organised its Annual Dinner for Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) students from China. The dinner was held as a welcoming gesture for the 59 students who arrived from China two weeks ago, and as part of an induction programme. The two-week long induction programme included an International Students Department briefing as well as a briefing by the Business Department at HELP.

The intention of the programme was to familiarise the new students with senior students as well as facilities and services in the vicnity. The following day the students were scheduled on a short trip to visit Genting Highlands, concluding the induction programme. Revision classes to prepare the students for their respective chosen courses, especially training in English language, were to commence this week.
The 59 students have known each other since their SISU days in China. They were treated to a speech about the student experience in HELP by two of their seniors at HELP, also from China, Mr. Du Yuan Bo and Mr Tang Jin Qiu, MBA students, entitled "Life at HELP University College".

Zhang Yi, 20, a student from the new batch and one of the top performers in his year, said that he was impressed with the weather in Kuala Lumpur as he thought initially that it might be too hot. "Compared to South China, Malaysia is not so hot" he says. He says he can get used to the rainy spells it as "it's not a big problem, the rain will stop soon." "I have been here for a week now, it is all new to me, it is an all English environment which is a bit challenging as in China we don't use English as frequently." About Malaysian food, he says that its delicious. However, "the traffic in Malaysia could use some caution", he jokes about Malaysian driving and traffic jams.
Present as guests of honour was Dr. Khong Kim Hoong, Senior Vice-President of HELP University College.

The students were clearly enjoying themselves as they heaped their plates with satay while chatting excitedly. The highlight of the night came when the "Newspaper Clothing" game was announced. Groups of students from each respective table scrambled to assemble clothes for their representatives from old newspapers. Then all eyes focused on the star as Bao Qian Qian, Vice-President, China Students Club, performed a Chinese opera, followed by a hip-hop routine by one of the boys. The night culminated in a lively karaoke session, joined in by staff and students alike.
